Oscar De La Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya will make his final decision tomorrow Thursday on who he will face in his last bout as reported yesterday by SI.com. Apparently Manny Pacquiao remains the number one choice followed by Sergio Mora with Paul Williams also being considered. In order for De La Hoya to land the fight with Pacquiao he needs to sweeten the offer, he originally offered Pacquiao 30 percent of the purse. Pacquiao is holding out for an offer closer to 40 percent however the deal can get done with a 65 -35 split or a 60 -30 split and the winner getting the remaining 10 percent . So we will be watching the wires tomorrow and looking forward to finding out De La Hoya’s swan song opponent.

Were is Boxing

Posted in Uncategorized on September 3rd, 2008 by admin

BY: Diane Bennett

Were has boxing gone it’s missing, I could not find any on television this weekend nor could I find any in the  Sports Museum of America on Sunday. Well I really should be honest and say I mean very little boxing was displayed at the Sports Museum of America which is located in downtown Manhattan, NYC. The museum actually had more volleyball’s than it had boxing gloves.

If you love or even like sports a trip to the museum should be in your plans it has great displays of the Heisman Trophy, Olympics and all of the mainstream sports. There are several interactive activities from broadcasting a game like situation to changing a tire on a racing car. However if you are looking for boxing the only displays you will find is a picture of Ali and a small screen next to the display which shows you several clips of famous boxing events. Even the gift shop did not have one boxing relating thing for sale no key chains with a boxing glove on it, sure they had ones with tennis balls, footballs, soccer balls and of course baseballs.

By now you get my point that us fans who love boxing and desire to see it on a regular basis are deprived. Let me tell you when I left the museum I wanted to call every single boxer, every promoter and every trainer I know just to say what the heck or you doing to promote this sport. There should be larger displays of boxing memorabilia at the museum we had great Olympic memories Leonard, De La Hoya and Breland. What happened to the living legends Forman, Frazier, Norton and Holmes none of these great heavyweights had items on display either. Actually, the Sports Museum of America is located in Breland’s home city and I could not find one artifact of the great boxer. It gets better there are several racks that have brochures of all the sports hall of fames and yes the IBHOF is not represented.

So I hope that one day soon all of the boxing greats will realize that they need to do every thing in their power to promote their sport and keep its greatness going. They need to keep the sport in the spotlight, they need to get out there and promote the heck out of it.

Great Fight Names

Pavlik - Hopkins face off

Pavlik - Hopkins face off

We received the below today from Top Rank Boxing listing the names of same of their greatest fights. The list also includes the name of the upcoming Kelly Pavlik – Bernard Hopkins fight scheduled for October 18th in Atlantic City. The fight will be marketed as “Unstoppable” as Pavlik has been on an all-out roll with wins over Jose Luis Zertuche, Edison Miranda, Jermain Taylor (twice) and Gary Lockett. Future Hall of Famer Hopkins has never been stopped. However, we still agree with Hopkins who wanted this fight to be called “The Blue Collar Fight” which describes the work ethics of these two boxers. As Hopkins stated in NY at the press conference that both him and Pavlik will train and fight anywhere and anyone. Hopkins said that they will train in the basement, in Moms kitchen, in a prison cell, they simply will train anywhere cause they are Blue Collar Fighters. How can we disagree with him, Hopkins at 43 is in great shape and has unequal discipline. This is a man that is totally dedicated to his body and sport he doesn’t drink or smoke, so no big celebrations’ after his victories. He always trains all year around just look at his six pack that talks the talk.
Then you have Kelly Pavlik who fights anyone that Top Rank puts in front of him. He doesn’t trash talk he just lets his fist do the talking in middle of the ring. His heart and determination can not be questioned especially after the first Taylor fight after surviving the early knockout and coming back to level Taylor. So yes these two are “The Blue Collar” boxers we are not normally accustomed in seeing.
Here are some of Top Rank’s greatest event titles and battles: 1985 - “The Fight” - Hagler vs Hearns 1986 - “SuperFight” - Hagler vs. Leonard 1990 - “The Puncher and the Preacher” - Foreman vs. Cooney 1990 - “Once Is Not Enough” - Toney vs. McCallum 1991 - “Battle of the Ages” - Foreman vs. Holyfield 1993 - “Heavy Damage” - Foreman vs. Coetzer 1996 - “Ultimate Glory” - De La Hoya vs. Chavez 1997 - “Buster on Broadway” - Douglas vs. Ryan in NYC 1999 - “Fight of the Millenium” - De La Hoya vs. Trinidad 2002 - “Bad Blood” - De La Hoya vs Vargas 2006 - “Sworn Enemies” - Mayweather vs. Judah 2007 - “War For Four” - Morales vs. Diaz 2008 - “Lethal Combination” - Pacquiao vs. Diaz 2008 - “The Battle” - Cotto vs. Margarito 2008 - “Unstoppable” - Pavlik vs. Hopkins Interesting, Bob Arum came up with the names of Top Rank’s two biggest events - SuperFight with Hagler vs. Leonard and Fight of the Millenium with De La Hoya vs. Trinidad. Rich Rose, then boxing director of Caesars Las Vegas, came up with Ultimate Glory. Mark Taffett’s crew at HBO PPV suggested Lethal Combination for Pacquiao vs. Diaz. Cotto vs. Margarito was initially called The Battle of the Decade when Top Rank president Todd DuBoef tightened it to ‘The Battle.’

Lightweights Go At It In September

Posted in Uncategorized on September 3rd, 2008 by admin

Khan lands uppercut

Khan lands uppercut

BY: Diane Bennett

September will be the month for the lightweights to show their stuff. The fun begins on September 6th when we have The Baby Bull Juan Diaz (33- 1, 17 KOs) going up against knockout artist Michael Katsidis (23-1, 20KOs). The bout will be shown on HBO Boxing after Dark live from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Diaz is coming off a devastating defeat by the hands of Nate Campbell. In that bout which was Diaz’s first defeat he also lost his world titles. Diaz who is now ranked anywhere between 3 and 4 depending which governing body you follow will be looking to get back on the winning track. However, he must figure out how to stay away from Katsidis’s power, Diaz will need to stick to a game plan of landing combinations and moving which he got away from in the Campbell fight. He can not get lured into a slugging match with Katsidis who is ranked 5th by the WBO and has one punch knock out power. Look for Diaz to get back to his boxing ways and to win this battle by unanimous decision.
Hours earlier on the 6th in Manchester England up and coming British Boxing star Amir Khan will be facing undefeated Colombian Breidis Prescott. Khan who is also undefeated and ranked 2nd by the WBO, 5th by the WBC and 10th by the IBF should be able to handle Prescott who only days ago was announced as Khans opponent. This is being classified as Khans biggest challenge aren’t they all and is Khans first under his new trainer Jorge Rubio. Look for Khan who under Rubio has been working on his defensive skills in order to become a complete boxer to take over the fight in the middle rounds and put Prescott away.
Lets now fast forward one week to September 13th which on this Saturday night we will be treated a lightweight triple header a HBO PPV clash between Joel Casamayor (36-3-1,22KOs) VS Juan Manuel Marquez (48-4-1,35KOs). On the same night Showtime will broadcast World Champion Nate Campbell who will defend his titles against Juan Guzman (28-0,17KOs). Campbell will be in a tough test against Guzman who has been able to beat the likes of Humberto Soto and Jorge Barrios. Campbell’s experience should help him through this one and we are projecting a unanimous decision victory for Campbell. Getting back to the Casamoyor – Marquez matchup our money goes on Marquez by TKO turn out the lights, it should be all Marquez in this one.
Lets not forget on the Campbell- Guzman undercard more lightweights will be pitted against one and another when Edner Cherry “Bomb” takes on Timothy Bradley. This match will be for Bradley’s WBC belt which he captured back on May 10th by upsetting Junior Witter in a bout held in Nottingham Arena in the UK. Don’t discount the Cherry Bomb from landing one of his original bombs and taking the title away from Bradley. So look for September to be the beginning of the who’s who in the lightweight division. With their eyes set on a Pac Man bout next year. Also look for Khan to set up camp next year in the US and make a championship run. He is going to need a few more bouts and some more seasoning under Rubio before he can step it up and challenge the likes of Diaz and Campbell.

Roach Trying to Save De La Hoya - Pacquiao Clash

Posted in Uncategorized on September 3rd, 2008 by admin

Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao

BY: Diane Bennett
So the latest news circulating around the De La Hoya – Pacquiao potential showdown is that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddy Roach is trying to broker a deal to make this fight happen. Both sides could not reach an agreement earlier in the week on the actual purse split. Pacquiao wanting a 40 percent share while De La Hoya is only willing to give up 30 percent. Now Mr. Roach says he will give up his fee if Pacquiao was to lose. Roach strongly believes Pacquiao will win and you have to believe strategy wise will have the advantage with Roach in his corner. Roach trained De La Hoya when he faces Floyd Mayweather so he knows De La Hoya’s weakness. I happen to agree with Roach if this bout somehow happens Pacquiao has a strong shot of defeating De La Hoya,
Yes the step up in weight will play a factor in this bout for Pacquiao however, his speed and relentless style will help him prevail. Also keep in mind De La Hoya is 6 years older than Pacquiao and may not have the stamina to go the distance against an aggressive fighter like Pacquiao. We will keep you posted next week to see if Roach has any impact on making this bout happen.
Tickets will officially go on sale to the public on Tuesday August 19th at 12pm EST for the Jones Jr. Joe Calzaghe clash at the Mecca Madison Square Garden ticket prices range between $150 for the get in the door seats and $1500 for the king of kings ring side seats. Once again you have to be a king to afford good seats to see a bout at MSG. Tickets prices for a decent seat will cost you between $1000 and $500.
However, for this one if you can afford to attend you will experience a very exciting atmosphere with Calzaghe’s fan club going wild in MSG. Calzaghe will have his faithful fan club from the UK in full force once again like Hatton the UK will have home field advantage in the US

Oscar De La Hoya –Manny Pacquiao Negotiations Breakdown

Posted in Uncategorized on September 3rd, 2008 by admin

BY: Robert Epstein

The hottest boxing news today was the breakdown of the Oscar De La Hoya –Manny Pacquiao negotiations for a December 6th bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Apparently the two sides could not reach an agreement on the percentage of the purse split. With De La Hoya only willing to give Pacquiao 30 percent of the purse and Manny wanting 40 percent a compromise could not be reached.

Pacquiao through his lawyer today informed the public that he is going to move on and seek another opponent for his next battle. Bob Arum head of Top Rank Pacquiao’s promoter will now try to lock in a November fight with Humberto Soto (44- 7, 28 KOs) of Mexico. Soto is coming off a controversial disqualification in a bout against Francisco Lorenzo In that bout which was part of the Pacquiao –David Diaz card at the Mandalay Bay on June 28. Soto knocked out Lorenzo, however, he was disqualified by referee Joe Cortez for hitting Lorenzo while he was down. The hit after the bell caused a cut on Lorenzo’s head to open and blood soaked the canvas. So it appears that Pacquiao will settle for the Soto bout which he will make several millions less dollars than if he faced De LA Hoya.

While team Golden Boy will huddle up next week to plan their next move and I believe they only have one move and it’s a move they may fear. They must dial up Antonio Margarito this is the only opponent left that will draw fan interest. Forget about Berto, Cotto and Clottey the fans will cheer a De La Hoya – Margarito slug fest. Yes De La Hoya will be an underdog in this bout but what a way to go out against the hottest boxer in the sport right now. Margarito coming off his scorching victory over Cotto is exactly what boxing requires. A De La Hoya – Margarito bout can break all pay per view records and will sell out in hours.

De La Hoya may lose actually he may get knocked out however if he pulls off the upset he will go out as a super legend. Oscar will go out on top of the boxing world beating the best in the sport right now. Why face anyone else when you can face the best, there is serious risk, however, in this sport that is all you do is put yourself at risk every single bout. Why not Oscar give the fans what they want to see a legend facing the most feared boxers in the game. If you win De LA Hoya you will be a super legend so forget the rest and have Richard Schaefer dial up Margarito.

Cloud finally scored a TKO victory when the referee stopped the fight at the 2:50 mark of the 10th round. Cloud has impressed with terrific knockout power winning 18 of his 19 professional fights by knockout. Tonight Cloud was devastating again bruising Gonzalez for 10 rounds. This was the first time Cloud went past 5 rounds and passing the stamina test. The way Cloud is going for sure he is going to make waves in the light heavyweight division. Keep your eyes open for the 26 year old Cloud who’s next fight should be for the IBF title

Andre Berto

Andre Berto

BY: Diane Bennett

Today we caught up with Andre Berto the undefeated (22-0, 19KOs) WBC welterweight champion at BB Kings in New York City prior to Lou DiBella’s Broadway Boxing event. Berto who will begin his training camp in about a week’s time as he starts to get ready for his first title defense against Steve Forbes.

You will remember Forbes who lost his last bout to Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya. In that bout Forbes lost by unanimous decision to the bigger De La Hoya. Berto recently captured the WBC belt by way of a 7th round TKO over Miguel Rodriguez was greeting fans and signing autographs prior to taking in a evening of boxing. Berto as always looked in great shape and informed us that he has been running and soon will be sparring. At this point Berto has not selected his sparring partners but is looking at some of the same sparring partners used by De La Hoya in his preparation for Forbes.

After the victory over Judah last weekend Joshua Clottey mentioned that he would like to take on Berto in his next bout. When we asked Berto what he thought of a bout against Clotty he dismissed the thought perhaps seeking a bigger name. Berto is really not trying to think past Forbes at this point. Look for Berto with his extreme knockout power to take out Forbes unlike De La Hoya.

Broadway Boxing at BB Kings NYC In the main event today at the sold BB Kings in Manhattan former world champion Randall Bailey (37-6, 34 KOs) took out Dairo Esalas (31-14, 25 KOs) in a junior welterweight bout. Right from the opening bell Bailey took out Esalas in the first round.

Heavyweight Vinny Maddalone (30-4, 21 KOs) from Flushing, New York destroyed Joe Stofle (11-14-2, 9 KOs) dropping Stofle twice in round before the bout was stopped.

Local junior middleweight James Moore scored a unanimous decision victory over Christian Lloyd Joseph. All three judges scored the fight for Moore 78-74, 78-74, 79-73.

Will Rosinsky in a light heavyweight clash Knocked out Valentine Fontanelly in the first round.

Dat Nguyen (13-1, 6 KOs) recorded a six round majority decision over Juan Cruz (5-3, 1 KO). Scores were 57-57, 59-55, 60-54. Dat is viewed as an up and coming featherweight prospect.

Ryan Kielczweski known as the Polish Prince all decked out in his crown and white shades made a successful professional debut beating Raphael Luna by unanimous decision 40-36 on all of the judge’s cards.

In the opening bout Jonathan Nelson won a unanimous decision over Rondu Campbell.

Pavlik - Hopkins NYC Press Conference

Bernard Hopkins and Nazim Richardson

Bernard Hopkins and Nazim Richardson

Today we attended the Kelly Pavlik – Bernard Hopkins press conference held at BB Kings in New York City. This was the kickoff for their up coming October 18th battle in Atlantic City. Upon entering the press room it only took Hopkins a few minutes to expose his six pack. Yes in matter of minutes Hopkins lifted his shirt showing all the media who gathered around him his six pack. Even at the age of 43 Hopkins sports a six pack most twenty year olds dream about.

Hopkins today was not his normal self he actually spoke nicely about Pavlik and referred to himself as a Pavlik fan. The line of the day however, goes to Richard Schaefer who in his opening remarks called Hopkins “The Ghost Buster”. Along with Schaefer, team Hopkins was represented by long time trainer Nazim Richardson and his lawyer Arnold Joseph. Hopkins in his presentation said that he had nothing bad to say about Pavlik. With that statement Pavlik broke out with a big smile and wiped his forehead. Hopkins went on to say that Pavlik has a big heart and a lot of determination. Hopkins who acknowledges this fight as the blue collar fight and even lobbied to officially name the fight as “The Blue Collar Battle”. Two blue collar fighters who will train anywhere, in prison, in basements or in their kitchens Hopkins went on to say.

Team Pavlik was represented by Kelly’s father Mike, manager Cameron Dunkin and his trainer Jack Loew. The confident Pavlik who is stepping up in weight to the 170 pound level stated that he will not have to struggle to make weight two fights in row. Pavlik’s last fight against Gary Lockett was at 160 pounds. The humble Pavlik in his presentation referred to Hopkins as a legend and said Hopkins was the biggest name out there for him. Pavlik ended by promising that the October 18th clash will be a good one.

After the press conference we caught up to Hopkins and asked him if he enjoyed the fights Friday night in Brooklyn and if he was impressed by lightweight Jorge Teron. Bernard actually brightened up and asked who has him. So maybe Teron has a Golden future to look foward to.
